Course Details

  • This course provides information on the 2017 periodontal and peri-implant disease classifications and how to use the BSP flowchart to support accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and clear communication in practice.
  • You will be presented with a short presentation followed by an assessment.
  • If you achieve a score of 80% or more, you pass the course and will receive a certificate to place in your CPD folder. If you do not pass, you will have the opportunity to review the content and retake the assessment when you feel confident to do so. 

Aims

The aim of this course is to provide dental professionals with the knowledge and confidence to apply the 2017 periodontal and peri-implant disease classifications in practice, using the BSP flowchart to support accurate diagnosis, treatment planning and clear communication.

Objectives

By engaging with this course, dental teams will be able to:

  • Understand the rationale for a classification system ​
  • Discuss the differences between the 1999 and 2017 Periodontal Classifications ​
  • Understand the BSP Periodontal Classification Flowchart ​
  • Discuss the classification of peri-implant diseases
  • Implement the flowchart for diagnosis of periodontitis cases in clinical practice

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course the learner will gain an understanding of how to:

  • Explain why a periodontal classification exists and how it helps diagnosis, treatment planning and communication.
  • Compare and contrast key differences between the 1999 and 2017 periodontal classifications and state the practical implications for UK practice.
  • Use the BSP periodontal classification flowchart to determine health, gingivitis or periodontitis in a typical patient presentation.
  • Describe the main categories of peri-implant diseases and the clinical criteria used to distinguish peri-implant health, mucositis and peri-implantitis.
  • Apply the BSP flowchart to stage, grade and assign disease status to at least two real or simulated periodontitis cases and write a concise diagnostic statement for each.
