Course Details

  • All dental practices are required by HTM 01-05 to perform routine testing and validation on their decontamination equipment. 
  • You will be presented with a coursebook followed by an assessment with options for feedback and reflection.
  • Once you have achieved a mark of 80% or more, you will be presented with a certificate to download.
  • If you do not pass you will have the opportunity to review the content and retake the assessment.

Aims

This course will provide learners with details of the testing and validation procedures required for a benchtop steriliser within a dental practice. 

Objectives

During this course learners will:

  • Understand the importance of testing and validating benchtop sterilisers.
  • Understand what a steam penetration test is and how it is performed.
  • Understand what an automatic control test is and how it is performed.
  • Understand what an air leakage test is and how it is performed.
  • Understand what a residual air test is and how it is performed.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course the learner can:

  • Explain the differences between the types of benchtop sterilisers available in dental practices.
  • List the required parameters of an automatic control test on a benchtop steriliser.
  • Explain how to perform a steam penetration test on a vacuum steriliser.
  • Identify each pass or fail result for the required tests.
  • Outline how frequently tests should be performed on benchtop sterilisers in line with HTM 01-05.
  • Describe how to perform all of the validation tests listed within the course objectives.
