Course Details

This module contains the following elements.

  • You will be presented with a short casebook followed by a case study.
  • You will then need to evaluate your learning through assessment.
  • If you achieve 80% or more, you pass the course and will receive a certificate for your CPD folder.
  • If you do not pass, you will have the opportunity to review the content and retake the assessment.

Our level 3 elearning will provide you with information that will help to demonstrate competency in accordance with the majority of requirements outlined in the intercollegiate safeguarding competences although it is not exhaustive.

It should be noted that professionals are also expected to keep abreast of key statutory and non-statutory guidance and legislation. Further, professionals should also support this elearning with regular clinical updating, clinical audit, reviews of significant events and peer discussions and take part in multidisciplinary training where possible.

Aims

This course is designed for all relevant staff to assist with their understanding of the principles of child safeguarding and how these principles apply to their work.

Objectives

During this course learners will be able to:

  • Identify (using a child and family-focused approach) possible signs of sexual, physical or emotional abuse, or neglect, including: domestic abuse; sexual exploitation; grooming; exploitation to support and/or commit acts of terrorism (or radicalisation); female genital mutilation (FGM); modern slavery; and gang and electronic media abuse.
  • Ensure the processes and legal requirements for looked after children, including after-care, are appropriately undertaken.
  • Contribute to inter-agency assessments by gathering and sharing information; documenting concerns appropriately for safeguarding/child protection and legal purposes; and seeking professional guidance in report writing where required.
  • Assess training requirements and contribute to departmental updates.
  • Deliver and receive supervision within effective models of supervision, and/or peer review, and be able to recognise the potential personal impact of safeguarding/child protection work on professionals.
  • Apply the lessons learnt from audit and serious case reviews/case management reviews/significant case reviews to improve practice.
  • Advise others on appropriate information sharing.
  • Appropriately contribute to serious case reviews (in Wales child practice reviews)/domestic homicide reviews, which include children/case management reviews/significant case reviews, and child death review processes, and seek appropriate advice and guidance for this role.
  • Obtain support and help in situations where there are problems requiring further expertise and experience.
  • Participate in, and chair, peer review and multidisciplinary meetings as required.

 

Learning Outcomes

 After completing this course the learner will gain an understanding of:

  • What constitutes child maltreatment, including the effects of carer/parental behaviour on children and young people.
  • Forensic procedures in child maltreatment.
  • How to undertake a risk and harm assessment.
  • How to communicate effectively with children and young people, and how to ensure that they have the opportunity to participate in decisions affecting them as appropriate to their age and ability.
  • How to contribute, and make considered judgements, when there is a need to safeguard/protect a child or young person, including how to escalate the process.
  • How to contribute to/formulate and communicate effective management plans for children and young people who have been maltreated using a multidisciplinary approach.
  • The issues surrounding misdiagnosis in safeguarding/child protection.
