Course Details
This course provides the dental team who take X-rays and have other roles in the production of an X-ray image with information relating to the imaging equipment and techniques for dental radiography.
It provides the following elements in compliance with schedule 3 of IR(ME)R 2017.
General
- Principles of radiological techniques.
- Production of X-rays.
- Equipment selection and use.
Fundamentals of image acquisition
- Image formats, acquisition, processing, display, and storage.

- You will be presented with a coursebook followed by an assessment with options for feedback and reflection.

Aims
This course aims to provide the dental team who take and have a role in the production of an X-ray image with information relating to the X-ray production and image formation, film image production, indirect and direct digital sensors, comparison of film and digital detectors, techniques for intra-oral radiography, techniques and limitations of hand-held X-ray units, and extra-oral imaging systems.
Meeting requirements in the IR(ME)R 2017 - Regulation 17 (Schedule 3), IRR 2017 - Regulation 15, and the 2001 Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners on the Safe Use of X-Ray Equipment.
Objectives
During this course learners will be able to:
- Outline the process of X-ray and image production.
- Define the mechanism of producing an analogue image using intra-oral and extra-oral radiographic film techniques and the processing procedure.
- Explain the mechanism of producing a digital image using direct and indirect methods.
- Describe the advantages and disadvantages of digital imaging and aspects of image manipulation.
- Identify techniques for intra-oral radiography.
- Identify techniques and limitations of hand-held X-ray units.
- Outline the types of extra-oral imaging systems.
