Course Details

This course will provide members of the dental team who do not take, but may or may not have a role in the production of, X-ray images with information relating to the Compliance with Safe Working Practices in the Dental Clinic. It provides the following elements in compliance with Schedule 3 of IR(ME)R 2017.

Radiation Protection

  • General radiation protection.
  • Use of radiation protection devices.

We recommend that you complete the full series of training courses in this subject to ensure you have the required information to support you in this area. 

Completion of all five courses suitable for your job role complies with IR(ME)R and IRR requirements.

  • You will be presented with a coursebook followed by an assessment with options for feedback and reflection.
  • Once you have achieved a mark of 80% or more, you will be presented with a downloadable certificate.
  • If you do not pass you will have the opportunity to review the content and retake the assessment.

Aims

This course aims to provide members of the dental team who do not take, but may or may not have a role in the production of, X-ray images with information relating to hazards associated with using intra-oral X-ray units during imaging procedures and safe working procedures to limit the hazards outlined.

Meeting requirements in the IR(ME)R 2017 - Regulation 17, IRR 2017 - Regulation 15, and the 2001 Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners.

Objectives

During this course learners will be able to:

  • Define the types of hazards present in an intra-oral unit during dental imaging.
  • Define the hazards associated with using an intra-oral unit during dental imaging.
  • Describe the practical radiation dose reduction principles and working procedures to limit dose to staff.
  • Define the contingency plans required for reasonably foreseeable events
  • Recognise the duties placed on staff to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and those of others.

Learning Outcomes

After completion of this course the learner will gain an understanding of:

  • The concepts of ionising radiation, cross-infection, manual handling, and electrical hazards.
  • The hazards associated with using an intra-oral unit during dental imaging.
  • The practical radiation dose reduction principles and working procedures to limit dose to staff.
  • Contingency plans are needed for reasonably foreseeable events.
  • The duties placed on staff to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and those of others.
