Course Details

• This course takes an in-depth look at the referral criteria for Special Care Dentistry. It provides examples of clinical conditions that general dental practitioners' patients can present with. It explores in detail some of the challenges faced by patients with general dentists and why it may be more suitable for them to be seen in secondary care or community care where the clinical needs can be adapted.
• You will be presented with a short presentation followed by an assessment. If you achieve a score of 80% or more, you pass the course and will receive a certificate to place in your CPD folder.
• If you do not pass, you will have the opportunity to review the content and retake the assessment when you feel confident to do so. 

Aims

This course aims to provide learners with a comprehensive overview of the referral criteria for Special Care Dentistry and gives a few examples of clinical conditions that general dental practitioners' patients can present with. It explores in detail some of the challenges faced by patients with general dentists and why it may be more suitable for them to be seen in secondary care or community care where the clinical needs can be adapted.

During this course learners will be able to:

• Discuss the criteria for referral to Special Care Dentistry.
• To review clinical conditions and the impact this can have on dental management.
• To review the current guidelines and evidence base related to special care dentistry.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course the learner will gain an understanding of:

• How to ensure correct patient care pathway for patients being referred.
• How to ensure referrals are being made appropriately and first line management in primary care wherever possible.
